Walking in the Spirit

“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”
— Galatians 5:16

God has glorious liberty for us. This liberty is found in walking after the Spirit and not after the flesh.

You are a spirit, you have a soul, and you live in a flesh body. We are strange and peculiar creatures. God is calling us to be dominated by His Spirit and to bring our bodies of flesh under His control.

The Church will one day walk fully with God. Walking in the Spirit is real. Listening to the Holy Spirit is a way of life that must be developed if we are to fulfill God’s calling in these last days (Romans 8:9).

Who Is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Godhead. God reveals Himself in three persons:

  • God the Father

  • God the Son

  • God the Holy Spirit

Scriptural references:

  • Old Testament: Genesis 1:2; 6:3; 2 Chronicles 15:1; Isaiah 11:2; 61:1

  • New Testament: John 14:26; John 15:26; 1 Corinthians 12:3

We must learn to walk in the Spirit if we are to fulfill God’s plan for this hour.

As you walk with the Lord, prepare your heart, feed on His Word, and listen to the Spirit of God. Your heart will be prepared, your mind renewed, and you will flow in the supernatural as naturally as a bird flies through the air.

Walking in the Spirit becomes so natural that you won’t even be conscious of “using your faith”—it will simply be the way you live. But to walk in this, we must let go of our attachment to this natural world.

“For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.”
— Mark 8:35

Part 2: Steps to Walking in the Spirit

If we hold onto the things of this world instead of serving God with our whole hearts, we will miss the glorious things of the Spirit. We have the same opportunity to do the Father’s will that Jesus had on earth.

Here are some keys to walking in the Spirit:

1. Be Faithful (Matthew 24:44–45)

Be ready at all times, for the Son of Man will come when you do not expect it. Commit yourself to be a wise and faithful servant.
Say: “God, You can count on me.”

2. Don’t Bury Your Talent (Matthew 25:14–29; Luke 12:48)

To whom much is given, much is required. Use what God has given you to His glory—don’t hide it in the ground.

3. Be Ready and Available (1 Peter 3:15)

Be ready to give a reason for your hope. God doesn’t look for ability; He looks for availability. As you pray, worship, and commune with Him, His character and glory will shine through you.

4. Overcome the Flesh (Matthew 26:40–41)

The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. Stay strong by spending time in God’s presence, keeping your priorities right.

Part 3: Deeper Walk in the Spirit

5. Confront Sin (Hebrews 12:1)

Lay aside every weight and sin that entangles you. God is calling us to holiness, love, and consecration.

6. Practice Godliness (Galatians 5:17; Romans 6:11–14)

Feed your mind with the things of God. Keep your flesh under submission through prayer, just as Jesus did.

7. Live as a New Creation (2 Corinthians 5:17)

The old has passed away—live in the new life you’ve been given.

8. Dedicate Yourself to God (Romans 8:5–13; Romans 6:16)

Whatever you yield yourself to will dominate you. Choose to be spiritually minded. Think God’s thoughts and live by His Spirit.

9. Listen to the Spirit (Romans 8:16)

Give your time to God’s Word, prayer, and fellowship. The Holy Spirit will bear witness with your spirit that you are a child of God and a joint-heir with Christ.

Living in Glorious Liberty

You have the ability to walk in the Spirit here on earth. You don’t have to wait until heaven to experience freedom from evil.

“Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.”
— Romans 8:21

Jesus prayed: “I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.” (John 17:15)

God has given you His Spirit to strengthen you (Ephesians 3:16). Walk in the Spirit, and you will live in victory, liberty, and power.
